The Pizza Explorer

Peter Oliver Pizzaro (P.O.P.) The IFT Pizza Explorer CD-ROM was created to teach students food science and the chemistry of food components in conjunction with the Food Chemistry Experiment Book. Utilizing interactive, hands-on activities, the program was designed for students in middle and high school to facilitate the learning of food science, chemistry, and biology. The educational tool uses pizza as a model to teach various aspects of science, allowing students to explore the pizza components with the assistance of the great guide "P.O.P." (Peter Oliver Pizzaro).

Students will learn about the history of pizza, the ingredients used to make pizza, food processing and chemistry, hot topics of interest, and nutritional composition. Along with component quizzes, nutritional tables, and an interactive game, a unique feature of the CD-ROM is that the student can tailor the learning experience using the Hemispheric Mode Indicator (HMI) configurator for right-brain or left-brain presentation.

Phytochemical Learning Resource

USDA Functional Foods ProjectThe educational project is designed to teach students about the field of functional foods with a primary focus on plant phytochemicals. The interfaces provide engaging learning activities for students to understand the chemistry, analysis, biochemistry, and health aspects of phytochemicals. StudentsThe Body Interface will discover the plant sources and chemical structures of the phytochemicals from the world interface, explore the biochemical pathways in a plant cell, study the effects of phytochemicals on tissues and organs to reduce chronic disease risk in the body, and learn how the phytochemicals are measured in a tutorial on chromatography. The project is funded by a grant from the USDA Higher Education program.

The Pizza Explorer - Space Version

A group of students from the Department Of Computer Graphics Technology tested new interface designs for their CGT 411 class project. They were led by Dr. Bruce Watkins and Kevin Hamstra from the Food Science Department.
